CHIMNEY INSPECTION

LEVEL 1

Level 1 inspection is recommended when your chimney and fireplace are in regular use and no changes have been made to the system.

This is the most common inspection for homeowners who maintain their chimney annually. During this visit, our technician will:

  • Examine all readily accessible portions of the chimney interior and exterior

  • Check the overall structure and condition of the flue and components

  • Look for blockages such as debris or animal nests

  • Inspect for creosote buildup or combustible deposits

  • Confirm the system is operating safely for continued use

This inspection is visual in nature and does not require removing materials or using specialized tools.

LEVEL 2

A Level 2 inspection is more detailed and is required when changes occur or when a property is being transferred.

This level is recommended when:

  • A home is bought or sold

  • The fuel type is changed (for example, wood to gas)

  • The chimney has been relined, modified, or repaired

  • A new appliance with a different performance rating is installed

  • The chimney has experienced a fire, storm, structural event, or suspected damage

In addition to everything included in a Level 1 inspection, a Level 2 inspection may involve:

  • Inspection of accessible attic, crawlspace, and basement areas

  • Evaluation using specialized tools or video scanning equipment

  • Closer examination of concealed areas to assess performance and safety

This inspection ensures the system is suitable for its updated use and free from hidden defects.

LEVEL 3

A Level 3 inspection is the most comprehensive evaluation and is performed when serious hazards or damage are suspected.

This level is necessary when:

  • A chimney fire has occurred

  • Severe weather, structural impact, or other events may have compromised the system

  • A Level 1 or Level 2 inspection reveals a condition that cannot be fully assessed without deeper access

A Level 3 inspection includes all components of Levels 1 and 2, but may also require:

  • Removal of certain chimney or building materials to access concealed areas

  • Thorough investigation of structural integrity and safety concerns

  • Detailed assessment to determine necessary repairs before the system is used again

This process is only performed when essential to diagnose a potential safety issue.

What Our Inspection Covers

During our inspections, ChimneyGuard carefully evaluates the critical components of your chimney system, including:

  1. Firebox – Checked for deterioration, cracks, and safe containment of heat

  2. Smoke Chamber – Examined for proper construction and venting performance

  3. Flue Liner – Inspected for damage, gaps, or buildup that could create hazards

Why Chimney Inspections Matter

A neglected chimney can develop creosote accumulation, structural damage, or hidden blockages that may lead to dangerous chimney fires. Some chimney fires burn slowly and go unnoticed, while others are sudden and severe, potentially causing extensive property damage.

Routine inspections help:

  • Detect problems early before costly repairs arise

  • Ensure safe ventilation of smoke and gases

  • Prevent fire risks and structural deterioration

  • Keep your fireplace operating efficiently and safely
